Instead of waiting for dinner, Kevin wandered down to the beach,
where the rest of the guys were. To his surprise, the four of
them were
flirting with a girl -- as he got closer, he realized that she looked
exactly like
the Hispanic intern they’d met that morning, dressed in a bikini that
left
little to the imagination.
As he approached the group, Nick noticed him and grinned.
“Hey,
Kev, let me introduce you to Catrina.”
Kevin furrowed his eyebrows. “Catrina? But ...”
The girl laughed. “You met my twin sister, Lorraine, this
morning.
She’s working for Rowena this summer.”
“Speaking of Rowena,” Brian said, “did you know she’s here, too,
Kev?”
“Yeah, I just saw her.”
Kevin took a seat on a rock, next to Nick. Nick, however,
wouldn’t
have noticed if an atomic bomb had gone off in the place Kevin now
was --
he was too busy concentrating on the curves of Catrina’s hips.
Kevin poked
him. “Put your eyes back in your head, bud,” he whispered.
“It wouldn’t
be polite to fuck the host’s daughter before dinner.”
Nick had the grace to blush. “Oh, shut up.”
“So, Kevin,” Catrina began, coming up and seating herself in front
of them, “I hear you met our resident ice queen even before this morning.”
“Ice queen?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Ro,” she clarified. “My sister said you two met at the Indigo.”
“Yeah, we did ...”
“Why do you call her an ice queen?” Nick wanted to know.
“Oh, Catie only thinks she’s frigid because Ro wouldn’t let her
date
a 25 year old the last time she was in Raleigh,” came a voice
from the path.
Catrina tossed a hot-tempered look towards her identical twin,
who
was sauntering towards them. Kevin glanced to his side and grinned
-- even
though Lorraine was more conservatively dressed in cut-offs and a T-shirt,
Nick still couldn’t figure out which sister to look at.
“Anyway ...” Lorraine continued, “I came down here
to tell you
guys that Maggie’s holding dinner for you, and Derek says that if you’re
not
there in five minutes, he’s starting without you, etiquette be damned.”
The group began to move back towards the house. Howie and
A.J.
fell in step with Lorraine; Kevin, walking behind them, heard snippets
of
banter and female laughter coming from their group. Nick was
still
working hard at impressing Catrina, who was returning the attention
with
full force. The two scenes amused Kevin so much that he missed
Brian
walking next to him until his cousin poked him in the arm. “So,
what
happened with Rowena?” Brian asked.
Kevin’s amusement faded. “I don’t know. Actually,
I’m kind of
afraid she’s Carlos Montenegro’s girlfriend.”
“Carlos? You mean, their father? Wouldn’t he be kind
of old for
her?”
“Happens all the time ...” Kevin shrugged. “She certainly
didn’t
seem too interested in talking to me, anyway.”
“Sorry, dude.”
Kevin shrugged again. That just seemed to be the way his
love life
had been going lately. Maybe, when they got back to the city,
he could find
someone to take his mind off of Rowena.
